29 September marks the feast day of the Archangel Michael (San Miguel). In Almuñécar, the neighbourhood tucked beneath the castle celebrates its patron saint with open-air bars, live music, and a procession with fireworks. 50 km to the west, Vélez-Málaga stages its Real Feria de San Miguel: a full week of daytime street parties and lively night-time fairgrounds. One is an intimate, neighbourhood affair within walking distance of Playa Tropical; the other is the premier feria of the Axarquía region.

What is being celebrated?
San Miguel is the Archangel Michael, one of only three archangels named in the Bible alongside Gabriel and Raphael. Known as the commander of the heavenly armies who vanquished the devil, he is traditionally depicted in full armour wielding a sword, often with a dragon or demon beneath his feet. The Church celebrates his feast day on 29 September, and many Spanish towns and quarters bearing the name San Miguel or home to a church of the same name host festivities around this date.
Almuñécar: the neighbourhood beneath the castle
In Almuñécar, San Miguel is the patron saint of the historic quarter nestled just below Castillo de San Miguel. Locals also refer to the area as El Castillo, and call themselves castilleros. This is a true neighbourhood fiesta rather than an official town-wide fair: the Asociación de Vecinos del Barrio de San Miguel (residents' association) organises it hand in hand with the municipal fiestas department. In 2026, fiestas councillor Alberto García Gilabert presented the programme alongside the association's president, María Dolores López Moreno. The celebration brings lively street bars, a marquee outside the fortress walls, music for all generations, and culminates in a Mass and procession honouring the archangel.

Vélez-Málaga: Real Feria de San Miguel
I In Vélez-Málaga, the capital of Axarquía, the San Miguel festivities are the town's primary annual feria. According to InforMálaga, a royal decree (Real Orden) granted the town the right to hold a late-September cattle fair back in 1842, and 1894 saw the publication of the first printed programme for the "Feria Real". Mi Vélez-Málaga notes that the celebration is also tied to the end of the harvest. Many of the pop-up bars and food stalls are run by the town's religious brotherhoods (hermandades), with proceeds supporting their year-round charitable work and Holy Week processions.
Historical sources differ as to whether San Miguel is the official patron saint of the town. According to Spanish Wikipedia, Vélez-Málaga's patron saints are San Sebastián and the Virgen de los Remedios, and Mi Vélez-Málaga explicitly clarifies that San Miguel is not the town's patron. Hoy Málaga, meanwhile, refers to him as "the town's historic patron saint". We have not found a definitive official verdict.

In Almuñécar, the procession and mass fall on the actual San Miguel's Day, 29 September, and the bars and music take place in the days leading up to it – in 2026 from Friday to Sunday. The programme was presented on 24 September 2026, the day before the fiesta began, so expect it to appear shortly beforehand.
In Vélez-Málaga, the feria dates change from year to year. In 2025, the opening speech (pregón) took place on 24 September and the feria ran from 25–29 September. In 2026, the opening speech was on 29 September and the feria took place from 30 September–4 October. The artists were announced on 14 September 2026 and the full programme on 23 September. According to Almuñécar Info, the procession starts at the castle and moves anti-clockwise through the district. We haven't found the specific street names. Throughout the neighbourhood in 2026 there was also an exhibition of historical local photographs (#yosoycastillero).

Free castle and museum
San Miguel coincides with the UN World Tourism Day on 27 September. According to Almuñécar Info's programme for 2026, there was free admission on this occasion to Castillo de San Miguel and the archaeological museum Cueva de Siete Palacios right by the festivities. Whether this will be repeated in 2027 is not yet known. Learn more about the town's history under El Majuelo and Peñón del Santo, located just below the castle.
The programme in Vélez-Málaga

- In the evening – Night feria: The fairground at Avenida Juan Carlos I featuring marquee tents, rides and concerts at 23:30 in the official marquee: Camela (Thursday, €5 (≈ 37,30 kr.)), Cali y El Dandee (Friday), Salistre (Saturday) and María del Monte (Sunday, free). Whether there were fireworks in 2026 is not mentioned in the programme. In 2025, according to Mi Vélez-Málaga, the town hall cancelled the fireworks out of consideration for animals and fire risk. We have not found any record of a San Miguel procession in Vélez's programme.

How to get there
Getting to San Miguel in Almuñécar
Walk: This is the easiest option. From Playa Tropical, it is about 2.5 km along the promenade past Puerta del Mar to the castle, around 35–40 minutes. The final stretch up to the neighbourhood is steep with steps and narrow streets. The return trip at night leads downhill and along the well-lit promenade.
Car: Do not drive up into the neighbourhood – the streets are narrow and filled with party bars during the fiesta. Park in the underground car park El Altillo at Paseo del Altillo (charges apply), about 6 minutes' drive from Playa Tropical. From there it is about 300 m to the castle, uphill.
Bus: The local town bus stops at Peñón del Santo and Paseo del Altillo. We haven't been able to confirm the late-night timetable – see Buses, and plan on walking or taking a taxi home after the fireworks.
Getting to Real Feria in Vélez-Málaga
Car: Vélez-Málaga is situated around 50 km west of Playa Tropical, roughly 45 minutes along the A-7 past Nerja and Torrox. For the daytime feria in the town centre, Pozancón by Parque María Zambrano is the nearest large car park (charges apply according to OpenStreetMap), a few minutes' walk from Plaza de las Carmelitas. In 2025, Mi Vélez-Málaga also recommended the parking areas around Parque María Zambrano by the bus station. The fairground is located about 2.5 km south of the centre at Avenida Juan Carlos I and the El Ingenio shopping centre, on the road towards Torre del Mar. Hoy Málaga notes that there is free parking on the outskirts of the fairground; we have not been able to confirm this. The town hall did not announce in advance which streets would be closed.
Bus: We haven't found any direct bus from Almuñécar to Vélez-Málaga late in the evening. The concerts start at 23:30, so in practice, taking the car (with a designated driver) or staying overnight is the realistic choice. Check bus timetables at alsa.es.
The buttons below the map open the route from Playa Tropical directly in Google Maps – both the walk to the castle and the drive to Vélez-Málaga.
Food and drink
Almuñécar: The fiesta revolves around the pop-up bars set up in the streets by the neighbourhood from midday, operated by local residents. We haven't come across a specific signature fiesta dish. Expect drinks, beer and light snacks at the bars, or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants by Puerta del Mar or San Cristóbal before the procession.
Vélez-Málaga: During the day, food and drink can be found at the stalls and bars on Paseo de los Naranjos and Plaza de las Carmelitas, with many bars run by the religious brotherhoods. In the evening, the action shifts to the marquee tents at the fairground. We have not found a dish unique to this specific feria.
Toilets
We have not found details regarding portable toilets at either of the fiestas.
- Almuñécar: According to OpenStreetMap, there are no public toilets within the neighbourhood itself. The nearest are at Plaza San Cristóbal at the foot of Peñón del Santo and in the park El Majuelo beneath the castle – evening opening times are unconfirmed. Otherwise, use the fiesta bars and cafés; it is polite to purchase something if you borrow their facilities.
- Vélez-Málaga: OpenStreetMap indicates a public toilet in Parque María Zambrano, just a few minutes' walk from the daytime feria. At the fairground, you'll rely on the bars and marquee tents. The El Ingenio shopping centre is located right next to the fairground; we have not checked its toilets or evening opening times.
Practical info
- Hills and steps. The San Miguel district in Almuñécar is the steepest part of town, featuring steps and cobblestones. Following the procession with a wheelchair or rollator is very difficult – pick a single spot along the route and stay there.
- Fireworks. The fireworks in Almuñécar are launched within the neighbourhood following the procession and can be heard across the entire town. Dogs that are fearful of loud bangs should be kept indoors that evening.
- Music until late. In both places, music continues well into the night. In Almuñécar the youth party kicked off at midnight, and in Vélez the DJ played from 01:30 following the live concerts.
- Dress code. For attending the mass, please keep shoulders and knees covered.
- Heat. Late September remains warm in the afternoons. The daytime feria in Vélez from 14:00–20:00 coincides with the hottest hours – bring water and a sun hat, or aim to arrive around 17:00.
- Cash. Carry cash with you for the street bars and fairground rides.
- Tickets in Vélez. Only the Camela concert charged admission in 2026 (€5 (≈ 37,30 kr.)), with tickets available from the tourist offices in Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar. Everything else was free of charge.
- Public holiday. According to Hoy Málaga and Mi Vélez-Málaga, 29 September is a local public holiday in Vélez-Málaga, meaning some shops and offices will be closed. In Almuñécar it is a normal working day.

Good advice
- Go to the procession. Arrive at the castle around 19:30 on 29 September so you are right at the starting point when San Miguel is carried out at 20:00.
- Combine it with the castle. Tour Castillo de San Miguel and the Cueva de Siete Palacios museum in the afternoon – in 2026 there was free admission around World Tourism Day on 27 September.
- Enjoy the views. The castle and the surrounding neighbourhood offer spectacular vistas over Puerta del Mar and the whole coastline. The sun sets around 20:00 in late September.
- Choose the daytime feria in Vélez. It is free, within walking distance of parking, and much easier to navigate than the night feria. Arrive around 17:00 once the heat begins to ease off.
- Never drive home from Vélez after drinking. The drink-drive limit in Spain is 0.25 mg/l on a breathalyser (see Customs and specific rules).
- Check the programme in September. Both schedules are released late – Almuñécar's only a couple of days before the festivities begin.
