The beaches

The coast at Almuñécar is a string of pearls of beaches and small coves between the cliffs. In 2026, the municipality was awarded five blue flags – more than any other municipality in the province of Granada.

Blue flags in 2026

  • Playa de Velilla – our own beach right in front of Playa Tropical, long and wide with a promenade all the way.
  • Playa Puerta del Mar – the town's main beach below the old town.
  • Playa de San Cristóbal – to the west, separated from Caletilla by the cliffs Peñones de San Cristóbal.
  • La Herradura – the horseshoe-shaped bay, popular for diving and kayaking.
  • Los Berengueles – by Marina del Este.

Small gems

  • Playa de la Caletilla – small beach by Peñón del Santo, where you can rent kayaks and paddleboards.
  • Playa de Cotobro – small, cosy beach with chiringuitos.
  • Calaiza and the coves at Cerro Gordo – easiest to reach from the water by kayak.

The beaches are stony or coarse-grained sand – bathing shoes are a good idea.
