Almuñécar's market hall – open again

23-10-2026 · 4 min. read

Fact-checked on 23-10-2026 against COPE and Info Costa Tropical (March 2026). Opening hours and stalls may change – ask at the hall if anything is essential.

The market hall: fresh produce from fish to fruit, every day except Sunday.

After six years of scaffolding and hoardings, Almuñécar's market hall is open again. The new Mercado Municipal features 44 stalls with fish, meat, cured meats, fruit and bread, a bar-cafeteria, three eateries and an underground car park with 230 spaces – and it is only about 2 km from Playa Tropical. This is where the locals shop, and you should too.

Open every day – except Sunday

While the weekly street markets each have their own day, the market hall is open Monday to Saturday from 8 to 15. That makes it the best place to buy fish, meat and fruit throughout the week – and a lovely spot to start your day. If you go between 8 and 10, the selection is at its best and the catch is fresh.

Six years without a market hall – and then it opened

The old market hall closed around six years ago for safety reasons. The redevelopment proved tough: during the pandemic and with escalating costs, the contractor warned they might pull out of the project. The mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, refused to budge, asserting that no one was walking away – and work continued. The total cost was just under 7 million euros, funded entirely by the municipality.

The official opening took place on Saturday 28 February 2026, Day of Andalusia, complete with a flag-raising ceremony, the municipal band, award presentations and an open house day. Over 1,000 locals and visitors toured the new premises, tasted dishes made with local ingredients and enjoyed a concert. In the evening, there was a celebration on the square. Daily trading commenced on Tuesday 10 March 2026.

What you will find in the hall

  • 44 stalls with fresh produce: fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, cured sausages and ham, and freshly baked bread. Before opening, the layout was planned according to AlmuñécarInfo as approximately 20 fishmongers, 10 fruit and vegetable stalls and 6 butchers and charcuteries – though this may have evolved.
  • A bar-cafeteria and three eateries built into the facades. Here you can sit down with a coffee or a tapa once you've finished shopping.
  • An underground car park with 230 spaces beneath the hall – a facility the town hopes will breathe new life into the entire area.
  • Cherimoya, avocados and mangoes from the valleys just behind the town, when in season.

This is what the stalls look like in an Andalusian market hall – here from Mercado de Atarazanas in Málaga. Almuñécar's new hall carries the same produce: fish, meat, cured meats, fruit and bread.

How to shop in the hall

  • Come in the morning. The fish is freshest early on, and the selection is at its widest. The hall closes at 15 every day.
  • Greet the vendor when you arrive – "buenos días" – and ask "¿Quién es el último?" if there is a queue. That way you know whom you are waiting behind. See Customs and Etiquette.
  • Ask what is in season. The stallholders are always happy to give tips and often offer a taste.
  • Have your fish cleaned. Ask the fishmonger to clean and prepare it, so it's ready for the pan.
  • Bring a shopping bag and some cash. Ask if the stall accepts cards – not all of them do.
  • Finish up at the bar. A coffee and a tostada after shopping is part of the experience.

The market hall and weekly street markets

The weekly markets, such as the Friday market with around 200 stalls, are great for clothes, shoes, household goods and flea market finds. The indoor market hall excels at food – and it is open every day. Combine them: pick up fish and fruit at the hall, and everything else at the Friday market.

How to get there

The market hall is situated at Plaza del Mercado in Almuñécar, about 2 km from Playa Tropical. You can walk from Playa Tropical along the seafront promenade and into town – or drive and park in the hall's own underground car park. Open the route in Google Maps below, or send it to your phone.
