How an evening in Almuñécar goes
The Spanish eat late. A typical evening starts with a beer or a glass of wine and a couple of tapas around 20–21. This is followed by dinner around 21–22 and a drink afterwards. In summer the streets are full of families until long after midnight. The pubs and the nightclub only fill up after 0.
You do not have to follow that rhythm. If you want a quiet glass of wine around 19, you can certainly have one, but the bars are often half empty then. If you want atmosphere, go out after 22.

The old town: the squares around the town hall
The old town lies on the hill below the Castillo de San Miguel castle. Plaza de la Constitución with the town hall is its heart. The square has cafés with tables outside, and from here the narrow streets lead up towards the castle and down towards Plaza de la Rosa and Plaza Abderramán. This is where people take a stroll after dinner, and where many of the small tapas bars are.
During Jazz en la Costa in July, jazz is played until late at night in bars and squares in the old town (Trasnoches de Jazz). Read more in Live music, flamenco and karaoke.

Places in and near the old town that are mentioned in the sources. None of them has opening hours we have been able to confirm:
- Pub Jabeque, Calle Aduana Vieja 3. The town's classic pub since 1979. The owner José Antonio Ruiz Aneas has died according to The Seaside Gazette. We have not been able to confirm whether the pub is still open.
- El Convento Sky Bar. A rooftop terrace on an old convent in the streets of the old town, according to almunecarinfo.com. It is not very high up, but it is cosy. The source is not dated.
- Robert's Top, Calle Livry Gargan 1. Pub with live music on Fridays and Saturdays according to costatropical.com (not dated) and jam sessions on Sundays according to The Seaside Gazette. In October 2025 live music was back after the summer break. Blues, soul, funk, rock and Celtic music.
- Kelibia by Plaza Kelibia. Tapas, wine and cheese, not a cocktail bar.
The council's tourism website Visit Almuñécar has a list of "pubs and nightclubs" including Café Luciano, The Madison, The Hideaway Bar, Sirena and Marea Beach. We have not been able to find addresses, opening hours or recent mentions of them, so they are not on the map.

Paseo del Altillo and Puerta del Mar
The promenade by the town's main beach is where most people take an evening stroll. From Playa Tropical it is approx. 20 minutes' walk along the water. On Paseo Puerta del Mar there are cafés, ice-cream parlours and cervecerías with tables facing the beach. At Paseo del Altillo the promenade climbs up over the rocks, and beneath it lie Los Bajos: a row of premises facing the sea. This is where the town's only nightclub is, The Big Bang Ocean Club with the beach terrace Arena Beach. It has its own article: House, chillout and disco.

Rooftop terraces with a view
If you would like a quiet drink with a view instead of a bar on the street, there are a couple of rooftop terraces:
- Bombay Sky Bar on the roof of Hotel Playa San Cristóbal, Plaza San Cristóbal. Chillout, food and cocktails with a view over the town according to almunecarinfo.com and hotel reviews. We have not been able to find the opening hours. According to a travel portal the bar was closed from October 2022 to June 2023, so expect it to be open in summer only. Ask at the hotel reception.
- Summer Rooftop Blue Bar at Hotel Helios on Paseo de San Cristóbal is mentioned in the same guide. The name suggests that it is only open in summer.

Right by Playa Tropical: Paseo de Velilla
You do not have to go far. On Paseo de Velilla, right outside the door, there are several bars and restaurants that are open in the evening during the season. These are all within 600 m according to OpenStreetMap and the site's own list of places to eat and drink:
- The Lookout, approx. 70 m from Playa Tropical. British bar where you can also watch football and rugby on TV.
- Antiguo Mesón Cabrera, the neighbour on the right as you go out. Wine barrels on the pavement and a terrace facing the promenade.
- Chiringuito Primera Ola, approx. 150 m. Beach bar with tables on the sand. Read more in Beach bars in the evening.
- Bar Los Mimbrales, approx. 550 m. Bar on the beach road.
Opening hours in the evening and in winter vary. Take a walk along the promenade and see where the lights are on.

Good advice
- Walk there, take a taxi home. The promenade from Velilla to Puerta del Mar is lit and flat. According to several guides the taxis wait opposite the bus station on Avenida Juan Carlos I. We have not been able to confirm an official taxi number.
- Eat late, or eat at a bar. Many kitchens only open at 20–20.30. Tapas are available most of the evening.
- Order a "caña". A small draught beer is called a caña. A large one is called a jarra or a pinta.
- Pay at the end. In Spanish bars you usually pay when you leave. Say "la cuenta, por favor".
- Tipping is optional. It is common to round up or leave a few small coins.
- Check whether the place is open in winter. From November to March it is quiet on weekdays, and some bars are closed.
- Do's & don'ts. Read the most important rules on alcohol, driving and safety in the nightlife overview.
