Nightlife in Almuñécar – times, rules and getting home

In Spain people go out later than most Danes are used to. Here is the practical information in one place: when bars and nightclubs open and close under the Andalusian rules, age limits and ID, dress, safety, the big party nights during the year, and how to get home to Playa Tropical without driving.

Fact-checked 02-11-2026

Checked against the Junta de Andalucía's Decreto 155/2018 on opening hours and types of venue (BOJA no. 150, 03-08-2018), a provincial bulletin from 2026 that reproduces the closing times, the Junta de Andalucía's page on the right of admission, the Junta de Andalucía's taxi fares between towns for 2026 (BOJA no. 49, 12-03-2026), Almuñécar Council's festival programme 2026 and the site's own festival articles. Internet access was limited: we could only read search results, not the pages themselves. What we could not confirm: whether Almuñécar Council has special closing times for terraces, the council's taxi fare within the town, an official taxi number, whether the night bus ran during the 2026 festival, and whether there was a Punto Violeta (support point against sexual assault) at the festivals in Almuñécar.

Spanish times

An evening in Almuñécar starts with a drink and a tapa around 20–21. Dinner is eaten around 21–22, often later in summer. The bars fill up after 22, the pubs after midnight and the nightclub only after 1–2. At weekends there is also tardeo in the afternoon: a party with music from the afternoon into the evening. It suits those who do not want to be up all night.

When do places close?

In Andalusia the Junta de Andalucía sets the latest closing times (Decreto 155/2018, art. 17.1):

Type of venueSunday–ThursdayFriday, Saturday and the eve of public holidays
Bars and restaurants (with or without music)2 am3 am
Pubs and music bars3 am4 am
Nightclubs and party venues6 am7 am

The council can extend opening hours by up to 2 hours on no more than 20 days a year, e.g. during the town festival. Terrace hours are set by the council. We have not been able to find Almuñécar's own rules for terraces.

The season

Almuñécar is a town where people live all year round, so there are always bars open. But from June to September it is by far the liveliest: the beach bars are open until late, there are concerts on the beaches and jazz in July. From November to March it is quiet on weekdays. Many chiringuitos close early or shut for the winter, and the nightclub is not open every night. Check the venue's Facebook or Instagram before you go.

Age limits and ID

  • Pubs, music bars and nightclubs: people under 16 may not enter. The venue may choose to admit only people over 18 (Decreto 155/2018).
  • Youth nightclubs (discotecas de juventud) are only for 14–18-year-olds, and no alcohol is served.
  • At a concert, children under 16 may attend with an adult for the duration of the concert.
  • Alcohol may not be sold or served to anyone under 18. Shops may not sell alcohol between 22 and 8.

Bring ID. In nightclubs you are often asked to show it, even if you are clearly over 18.

What to wear

In bars and beach bars it is relaxed: shorts and sandals are perfectly normal. The Spanish do, however, dress a little smarter in the evening than during the day. Nightclubs may refuse entry according to rules that they must display at the entrance (derecho de admisión). We have not found a written dress code for Almuñécar's nightclub. Leave swimwear and bare chests on the beach.

Prices

We have no confirmed, dated prices for drinks and entry in Almuñécar. Prices are on the menu or at the bar. Ask about the price of drinks at the nightclub before you order – several reviews complain that they are expensive.

Safety

  • Keep an eye on your glass. Never leave your drink unattended, and do not accept drinks from strangers. If you suddenly feel very drunk or unwell, tell the staff or a friend immediately, and call 112.
  • Pickpockets. Where there are crowds – the feria, the fireworks and Midsummer's Eve – keep your bag in front of you and your phone in a closed pocket.
  • Swimming at night. There are no lifeguards in the evening and at night. Do not swim after drinking alcohol, not even on Midsummer's Eve.
  • Driving. The blood alcohol limit in Spain is 0,5 (0,3 for new drivers), and the police carry out breath tests, especially during the festivals. Never drive after drinking.
  • Emergency number 112 covers police, ambulance and fire service. You can speak English.

If you need a pharmacy at night, the window of Farmacia Velilla Playa by Playa Tropical shows which pharmacy in Almuñécar is on duty.

The big party nights

During the festivals there is life all night, and there are free concerts. The most important in Almuñécar and La Herradura:

Getting home

  • On foot: The promenade from Velilla to Puerta del Mar is flat and lit. It is approx. 1,5 km (20 min) to Puerta del Mar, approx. 2 km to the town hall square and approx. 2,3 km to El Majuelo.
  • Taxi: According to several guides the taxis wait opposite the bus station on Avenida Juan Carlos I. We have not been able to confirm an official taxi number or the council's fare within the town. To and from other towns the Junta de Andalucía's fares apply: at night (22–6) and at weekends rate 8 at 0,82 € (≈ 6,12 kr.) per km (2026).
  • Night bus during the town festival: In 2025 the council ran a free night bus (Bus Búho) during the festival from 9–15 August. We have not been able to confirm whether it ran in 2026.
  • Bus between towns: ALSA's last evening departures are early – see La Herradura and Granada, Nerja and Málaga. For Granada and Málaga it is most realistic to stay overnight.

Good advice

  • ID card or passport in your pocket – a copy is not always enough at the nightclub.
  • Cash and cards. Most places take cards, but carry a little cash for taxis and small bars.
  • Phone charged and Playa Tropical's address saved, so you can show it to the taxi driver.
  • Agree a meeting point in case you get separated during the feria or the fireworks.
  • Check the day's programme on the venue's Facebook or Instagram. In winter it may be closed.
  • Drink water. In summer it is hot at night too.
  • Do's & don'ts. Read the most important rules on alcohol, driving and safety in the nightlife overview.
