Motorhome near Almuñécar – top 10, places & rules

Almuñécar is a good base for a motorhome: two motorhome areas and three campsites within 6 km, a mild winter and the mountains right behind the town. Here is our top 10 for motorhomers, a combined table of the places with confirmed prices, the most important rules for overnight stays, and links to the whole series on places, waste disposal, gas, roads, gear and wintering.

Fact-checked 02-11-2026

Checked against the series' eight articles, all of which were fact-checked on the same day against, among other things, the places' own price lists, Almuñécar's by-law on motorhomes (BOP Granada no. 127, 06-07-2016), the DGT's instruction on motorhomes (2026), Andalusia's Decreto 26/2018 (BOJA no. 27, 07-02-2018), the Coastal Act (Ley 22/1988), the motorway companies' tolls for 2026, administracion.gob.es and OpenStreetMap. Many official Spanish websites we could only read as excerpts from a search engine, not open directly – see the sources in the individual articles. What we could not confirm: the prices at most places outside Almuñécar, the councils' fine amounts, whether you may empty your tanks at petrol stations without being a customer, the toll class for motorhomes on the toll roads, and driving distances by road (distances are as the crow flies from the town hall in Almuñécar).

Motorhome in Almuñécar – the essentials first

Almuñécar lies where the mountains run right down to the sea. That makes for a beautiful coastline, but also narrow streets, steep entrances and underground car parks with 2,1–2,3-metre height limits. With a motorhome you therefore need to choose your pitch and your parking carefully. The good news: you do not have to search for long. The town has two proper motorhome areas (áreas) and three campsites, and from these you can walk or take the bus into the centre.

Distances throughout the series are measured as the crow flies from the town hall in Almuñécar. By road they are longer – especially in the mountains.

Top 10 for motorhomers

Ranked by what offers the most for a motorhome based in Almuñécar: legal overnight stays, services and experiences. Prices are from the places' own websites, as of November 2026.

1. Alclub at Velilla – the town's own motorhome area

The only área in Almuñécar town itself, 1,9 km from the town hall and a few hundred metres from Playa de Velilla. 28 pitches, open all year, grey and black water disposal, water and electricity. 20 € (≈ 149 kr.) per night for 2 people, 120 € (≈ 895 kr.) for a week, electricity 5 € (≈ 37,30 kr.) per day (own website). According to users, the entrance is steep. Read more in motorhomes in Almuñécar.

2. Camping Tropical – cheapest outside the summer

The campsite by the N-340 in Río Verde, 1,3 km from the town hall. 19 € (≈ 142 kr.) for a motorhome and 2 adults outside 1 July–31 August, electricity 3 € (≈ 22,38 kr.) per day. Waste disposal and drinking water are included in the price. Open all year. We have not been able to confirm the summer price.

3. Área Cámper La Herradura – by the quieter bay

Approx. 40 pitches in Calle Las Palomas, 4,5 km west of the town hall. 15 € (≈ 112 kr.) without electricity and 20 € (≈ 149 kr.) with electricity outside July–August, 18 € (≈ 134 kr.) and 23 € (≈ 172 kr.) in July–August. Waste disposal for guests only. The website says it is closed 1 June–3 July. From here you can walk to the beach and Marina del Este.

4. Camping El Pino in Torrox – best for winter

23 km to the west. The place on the coast where we found the clearest price list: 18 € (≈ 134 kr.) per night outside the high season incl. 10 kWh of electricity, and a winter offer of 320 € (≈ 2.387 kr.) for the first month and 310 € (≈ 2.313 kr.) for the following ones from 15-09-2026 to 15-06-2027. Torrox Costa also has several private áreas. See places on the coast and wintering.

5. The coast road to Cerro Gordo and Maro

The old N-340 west of La Herradura winds along the cliffs to the Mirador de Cerro Gordo viewpoint (approx. 7 km) and on towards Maro. A short stop with views over the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo nature park – but not a place to spend the night. See spots and trips and Maro-Cerro Gordo.

6. Alpujarra – the white mountain villages

The biggest must-see in the mountains, approx. 30–47 km away. In Pampaneira there is a small free municipal overnight area at the entrance to the village (sources disagree on whether it has 3 or 6 pitches, and there is no toilet disposal). The roads up through the Poqueira gorge are narrow and winding, and the road to Trevélez is not suitable for large vehicles. Campsites near Órgiva are the safe choice. See spots and trips and Alpujarras.

7. Granada and the Alhambra – take the bus in

Approx. 44–50 km. Do not drive a motorhome into Granada's centre. Camping Reina Isabel in La Zubia, south of the city, is open all year and has a bus to Granada. Book your Alhambra ticket well in advance. Sources disagree on whether you may stay overnight in the Alhambra car park. See Granada and the Alhambra.

8. Antequera and El Torcal – free área

Approx. 85 km. Antequera has a free municipal motorhome area with 16 pitches. From here you drive up to the rocky landscape of El Torcal and see the dolmens, which together are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A good two-day trip, possibly combined with the Caminito del Rey (approx. 98 km).

9. Waste disposal without an overnight stay – Nerja and Vélez-Málaga

If you are not staying at a site, you need to find petrol stations with a disposal point. According to OpenStreetMap, the Moeve station by the A-7 at Nerja/Frigiliana (approx. 18 km) and Distreax-22 in Vélez-Málaga (approx. 36 km, open 24 hours) have grey water and chemical toilet disposal. We have not been able to confirm price and access – ask at the till. All 21 disposal points are listed in waste disposal, water and gas.

10. Cabo de Gata – the long trip

Approx. 130 km to the east: desert coast, volcanic cliffs and the lighthouse on the cape. But the nature park is strict – in August 2026 around 100 motorhomes were fined for staying overnight. Sleep at Camping Cabo de Gata by the AL-3115 km 10. See rules and fines.

The 10 most important do's & don'ts

The rules are explained with sources in rules and fines. In short:

  • Spend the night at an área or campsite. That is the only completely safe option in Andalusia, where Decreto 26/2018 prohibits camping and overnight stays for holiday purposes outside campsites.
  • Park, but do not camp. According to the DGT, a motorhome may park like other vehicles. Awning, chairs, tables, levelling jacks or waste water out = camping.
  • Never on the beach. The Coastal Act prohibits driving, parking and camping on the beach.
  • Respect the signs. In Almuñécar, signposted zones may be used for no more than 72 hours in a row, and camping is prohibited on the promenades and in the front row by the beach.
  • Only empty at disposal points. Never toilet or grey water in nature, on the beach or down a drain.
  • No fires 1 June–15 October. No barbecues or fires in the countryside during the fire season.
  • Check the height. Underground car parks and supermarkets often have barriers at 2,0–2,3 m.
  • Do not drive into the old towns. Almuñécar, Salobreña, Nerja and Frigiliana – park outside and walk.
  • Check the weight. A category B licence covers up to 3.500 kg maximum authorised mass. Heavier requires C1.
  • Take your rubbish with you, and keep the noise down. No generators or loud music in car parks, and rubbish in the bin.

The trade fairs

Two motorhome fairs are held within 250 km and are listed in the festival calendar:

  • Salón Andaluz del Caravaning in the IFECA exhibition hall in Jerez de la Frontera (approx. 217 km as the crow flies) – Andalusia's big fair for motorhomes and caravans, at the end of February. The dates for 2027 have not been announced yet.
  • Autocaravanas Norte in Campillos in the inland part of Málaga province (approx. 110 km) – a sales fair for new and used motorhomes. See the dates in the festival calendar, and always check the fair's own website.

Dealers, workshops and rentals are listed in gear and workshops.

Good advice

  • Call or write before you set off. The places change prices and closing periods – especially in summer.
  • Know your height, length and weight. Write them on a note by the steering wheel.
  • Arrive early. Áreas in the towns fill up in the afternoon in high season and in winter.
  • Empty and fill up when you can. Disposal points without overnight stays are few and far between on the Costa Tropical.
  • Carry euro coins and cards. Many áreas have machines.
  • Leave nothing visible in the vehicle. Lock doors and windows, even when you are close by.
  • Save 112. The emergency number works from all mobiles. In case of breakdown: see breakdown.

Many of the series' official sources could only be read as excerpts. The rules and prices are dated November 2026 – always check the signs on site and the place's own website before staying overnight.
