Worth a trip: flamenco in Granada – and an evening in Nerja or Málaga

One evening outside Almuñécar is really worth the trip: flamenco in the caves of Sacromonte in Granada, 80 km away, with free tapas and sunset over the Alhambra first. Here are the caves, the tapas streets and a few places to sleep within walking distance. That matters, because the last bus home leaves early. Finally, a short note on an evening in Nerja (25 km) and Málaga (approx. 80 km).

Fact-checked 02-11-2026

Checked against ALSA's page for the Granada–Almuñécar route, the hotels' own websites (Macià Plaza, Casa Morisca, Palacio de Santa Inés, Balcón de Europa, Plaza Cavana, Molina Lario and Vincci Larios Diez), Granada's tourist office, the Junta de Andalucía's taxi fares for 2026 (BOJA no. 49, 12-03-2026), ticket portals for flamenco (taquilla.com, flamencotickets.com, Civitatis) and OpenStreetMap. Internet access was limited: we could only read search results, not the pages themselves. What we could not confirm: the flamenco caves' official prices and times for 2026 (the prices below are from ticket portals), the hotels' current prices, check-in times for several of the hotels, the last bus from Nerja and Málaga in ALSA's own timetable, and a fixed taxi fare to Almuñécar.

Granada: an evening in the Albaicín and Sacromonte

A good plan for an evening in Granada is sunset at the Mirador de San Nicolás, tapas around 21 and flamenco at 22–23. Afterwards you spend the night in the city. The Albaicín and Sacromonte are the old quarters on the hill opposite the Alhambra. The streets are steep and cobbled, so wear good shoes.

Sunset at the Mirador de San Nicolás

From the square in front of the San Nicolás church in the Albaicín you can see the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada behind. It is free and needs no ticket, but in summer it is packed with people. You walk up from Plaza Nueva in approx. 20 minutes. The Mirador de San Cristóbal is a quieter alternative.

Free tapas

Granada is famous for the fact that in many bars you get a small dish free with every drink. Not every bar, but most of those in the classic tapas streets. Calle Navas by the town hall has more than 20 bars and is classic, a little touristy, but good. Campo del Príncipe and the Realejo quarter are more local. The best time is approx. 21–23. See also Granada's tourist office page on tapas.

Flamenco in the caves of Sacromonte

In Sacromonte the gitanos (Roma) live in caves in the hillside, and this is where zambra, a special Granada form of flamenco, originated. The show takes place in a whitewashed cave close to the audience, often without a microphone. These caves are established and operating in 2026 according to ticket portals and reviews. Prices and times are from ticket portals and should be checked with the venue:

CaveWhat we know
Cuevas Los Tarantos, Camino del Sacromonte 9Since 1972. Shows of approx. 75 min at 19, 21.15 and 22.30. From approx. 26 € (≈ 194 kr.). The telephone number differs from source to source – find it on the cave's own website
Cueva de la Rocío, Camino del Sacromonte 70Since 1951. Approx. 1 hour. Approx. 27–28 € (≈ 209 kr.) with a drink. The times are unclear (22, or every hour 20–23)
Zambra María la Canastera, Camino del Sacromonte 89Founded approx. 1970 and run by the family. Approx. 60 seats. From approx. 24 € (≈ 179 kr.)
Venta El Gallo, Barranco de los Negros 5Since 1977. Show at 21, dinner from 20 according to ticket portals. From approx. 19–25 € (≈ 186 kr.)

If you would rather experience a genuine flamenco club, Peña La Platería in the Albaicín (Placeta de Toqueros 7) holds Jueves Flamencos on Thursdays for a smaller price. The Thursday evenings started at 21.30 in 2025 according to VidaFlamenca, and the club had events in both January and July 2026. See the programme on the club's website laplateria.es. The caves often offer packages with hotel pick-up.

Getting home from Granada

This is where the plan has to hold up. According to ALSA's own page for the route, the last bus from Granada to Almuñécar leaves at 19.30 (arriving at 20.45). The ticket portals Movelia and Omio show later departures, but they do not agree. Check on alsa.com on the day you travel. After an evening of flamenco there is no bus, so you have three options:

  • Stay overnight in Granada (we recommend this – see below).
  • A driver who is not drinking. Approx. 80 km and approx. 1 hour via the A-44 and A-7.
  • Taxi. A journey out of town is not run on the meter. Agree the price before you set off. The Junta de Andalucía's night rate between towns is 0,82 € (≈ 6,12 kr.) per km (rate 8, 2026). We have not found a fixed price to Almuñécar.

Nerja – an evening 25 km away

Nerja is the nearest larger town with nightlife. In the evening people stroll on the Balcón de Europa and end up at Plaza Tutti Frutti, the town's bar square with approx. 15 bars. They open around 21–22 and stay open until approx. 3, some until 4. It is liveliest in summer and at weekends. There has been flamenco at a couple of bars, e.g. Bar El Molino on Calle San José, but one source now lists the bar as closed, so check before you go.

Getting home: The last bus from Nerja (Avenida de Pescia) to Almuñécar is at 23.15, arriving approx. 23.45, according to the ticket portals Omio and Movelia. We have not been able to confirm this with ALSA. Taxi: approx. 25 km.

Málaga – tapas and bars in the centre

Málaga's old town has dense rows of bars around Calle Larios, Calle Granada, Plaza de Uncibay and Plaza de la Merced. The Soho quarter is good for dinner and a drink afterwards, and in the fishing district of Pedregalejo you sit in chiringuitos with grilled sardines. See also Málaga in a day.

Good advice

  • Book flamenco in advance, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. The caves are small.
  • Book accommodation first, and plan the evening afterwards. The last bus from Granada leaves before dinner.
  • Do not park in the Albaicín. The streets are narrow and partly closed to cars. Use the hotel's car park or a public car park in the centre.
  • Good shoes. Steep cobbles in the Albaicín and Sacromonte, and it is dark on the way up.
  • Agree the taxi fare before the journey if you take a taxi out of town.
  • Check ALSA on the day. The ticket portals' times do not always match ALSA's own.
  • Do's & don'ts. Read the most important rules on alcohol, driving and safety in the nightlife overview.
