Sugar cane rum from the Costa Tropical
For centuries, sugar cane was the coast's most important crop, and Motril was the centre of the sugar industry. The Montero family ran a sugar factory, and in 1963 Francisco Montero Martín – known as Uncle Paco – founded the Ron Montero rum brand itself. Since childhood he had hung around the family distillery and wanted to create his own blend.
The sugar cane fields are practically gone today, but the tradition lives on: the rum is aged slowly in American oak casks according to the traditional solera system, where older and younger rums are blended across tiers of barrels.
The guided tour
The tour is a guided walk through the distillery, ending with a tasting of the rums. There is one tour a day in each language – Monday to Saturday:
- 10:00 – in French
- 12:00 – in Spanish
- 13:00 – in English ← the one to pick if you do not speak Spanish
There are no tours in Danish. The English tour at 13:00 is the obvious choice, and it fits nicely after a morning on the beach. The distillery is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.

Good advice
- Arrive in good time – the tour starts on the hour.
- You will be driving afterwards. The tasting features small samples, but let the driver stick to water and coffee.
- Buying bottles to take home? Pack them in your hold luggage – liquids over 100 ml are not allowed in hand luggage when flying.
- Check before you go: Times and closing days can change. Check ronmontero.com/visitas if in doubt (for instance, it was closed on 1 October 2026 for a private event).
- Combine with a drive through the fruit valleys or lunch in Motril before heading back.
